The atmosphere at the intimate dinner Beckham later attended at the Four Seasons Restaurant hosted by Sadove was decidedly quieter, allowing for the former Spice Girl to meet, and charm, members of the fashion press. “I brought my sister Louise with me because I wasn’t sure if she would be the only one to show,” she laughed as she entered the lobby, scurried up a flight of stairs, passed the sixth-annual Mergers and Acquisitions Conference going on in the main room, and finally arrived in the private dining room, which was also awash in purple from the lighting to the centerpieces. “I just managed to have two minutes to go back to the Four Seasons, check on the children, and change. Isn’t this lovely?” she asked, before toasting, “I know everyone wants to eat, including I, to crush any rumors.”

Her magnificent pear-shaped diamond ring, a gift from her husband, captivated Fern Mallis, Elle’s Whitney Vargas, and Saks’ Caroline Dougherty, prompting Mallis in inquire over its carat weight. “It says D on one side and V on the other,” Beckham responded, shying away from the question, “but you can’t read it the other way around—otherwise it’s an STD

“She really understands denim,” said Joseph Boitano, Saks’ senior vice president and general merchandising manager of women’s and children’s. Ron Frasch couldn’t help but quip, “At first, I joked to Joe that she’s the only one that’s going to be able to fit into those jeans; she’s definitely her own customer.” But in seriousness, Saks’ president and chief merchandising officer was resolute in his belief in the line, citing Beckham’s passion as having been a chief deal maker. “I don’t think we thought of it as another celebrity product,” he said. “This one had longevity.” Boitano couldn’t agree more.
