After three days of downpours, David, 37, Victoria, 38, and their four kids decided enough was enough.
They boarded a private plane back to Male airport in the Indian Ocean island group on Boxing Day before heading to somewhere sunnier.
It was a major disappointment for the family who had arrived at the One&Only Reethi Rah resort last Sunday, hoping to stay for 11 days.
A source said : “It really is unfortunate for them, especially because it’s such a beautiful place.
“But there was hardly anything for them to do except wait for the rain to stop. They arrived too late to leave in time to snatch Christmas Day somewhere sunny so they left on Wednesday.
The source added : “They were told by staff the rain could pass any day but the forecast for the coming days didn’t look good either. You can only keep four children inside without anything to do for so long, especially over Christmas.”
Former England skipper Becks, who left US side LA Galaxy earlier this month, had booked the most expensive suite at the complex. It cost a whopping £8,600 a night.
Three others, each at £3,700 a night, were also booked and made ready for the couple and their sons Brooklyn, 13, Romeo, ten, Cruz, seven, and 18-month-old daughter Harper.
Becks may have been hoping to spend his time doing a spot of big-game fishing laid on by the hotel, while for Victoria there was an array of spa treatments available.
Forecast ... more rain on the way in the Maldives
The resort — which has 130 private villas, 12 beaches, 40 pools and a seaplane — also has “swirling vitality pools, crystal steam rooms, saunas and stimulating ice fountains”.
It is estimated the Beckhams’ decision to cut short their holiday would have set them back around £60,000 just on lodgings because the hotel is not obliged to refund money just because of bad weather.
Their current whereabouts is unknown, although sun would be guaranteed in Dubai, Oman and the and United Arab Emirates. all a five-hour flight to the west.
Thailand, three hours to the east, would also be a good bet.
Even the Beckhams can’t guarantee that the sun will shine. Their hugely expensive Christmas break in the Maldives was cut short this week as the torrential rain finally got too much to bear and the family took drastic action and flew to the sun-sure destination of Dubai.
It was an expensive decision for the celebrity couple – they had already shelled out nearly £220,000 to take their four kids to the One&Only Reethi Rah in the Maldives.
The hotel – with its 130 private villas, 12 beaches, 40 pools and its own seaplane – is a real gem but nowhere is great in the rain, especially when you have kids in tow.
December can be dodgy in the Maldives, as one of the two rainy seasons hits the islands during this month.
