Tuesday, May 22, 2007
(LONDON) Victoria Beckham has joined the judging panel of the 16th-annual Graduate Fashion Week, joining Harper’s Bazaar’s Glenda Bailey, Alber Elbaz, and River Island managing director Richard Bradbury in deciding which student collection will win the prestigious River Island Gold Award. Graduate Fashion Week 2007 is scheduled to take place from June 3-6 at Battersea Park Arena in central London.
The judging process for this year’s award will begin with a pre-selection from 38 initial collections to produce the best 10. Alexandra Stylianidis, women’s wear buyer at Browns Focus, will be joined by her menswear counterpart, Ivan Donovan, for this initial judging. The final 10 will then go through an interview process by the River Island Gold Award judges and the overall winner will receive prize money of £20,000, the largest prize in British fashion education.
In addition to the River Island Gold Award, this year’s judges will also select a men’s wear and women’s wear award winners. Burberry creative director Christopher Bailey, having served as a judge in the past, was the first-ever winner of the GFW Best Student Award.
Unprecedented demand last year for gala show tickets has led to the addition of a second show to the schedule. No award winners will be announced at the 5:30 p.m. show, but it will allow visitors to see all the student entries for the awards. The second show at 8:00 p.m. will feature the best 16 collections from the weeks shows in front of an invitation only audience.
